The entire AlgaEnergy team wishes to convey its affection and sincere thanks to all those people who are working, under very harsh conditions, to face the crisis caused by COVID-19.

Our recognition is especially meant for health professionals, who even give their lives to take care of ours, and in addition our gratitude goes to all the people who are part of the agri-food chain, for the effort they are making to guarantee uninterrupted food supply to the population. Together let’s all make their efforts merit the results they deserve.

Take care and protect yourself.

Goal 2. Zero Hunger

Put an end to hunger, achieve food security, improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture

Microalgae are a renewable and inexhaustible resource, which also has the highest protein content on the planet. They do not compete with other food resources because they do not need agricultural land to be cultivated. They are also essential for the farming of many species of fish and mollusks in the aquaculture industry. Last but not least, the products marketed by AlgaEnergy are capable of significantly increasing agricultural productivity and returns this industry around the world, a determining factor to combat world hunger.

Goal 3. Health and well-being

Ensuring a healthy life and promoting well-being for at all ages for all

Microalgae have a high content of high valuable compounds of 100% natural origin, with immense application potential in human nutrition and pharmaceutical industry. Also known as phytoplankton, they are the origin of omega-3 fatty acids and contain all kinds of natural vitamins and antioxidants that improve the life of those who consume them. AlgaEnergy leads and participates in R&D programs whose goals are to develop mass consumption foods with microalgae as functional ingredients in order to contribute to alleviating the symptoms of metabolic syndromes, such as obesity, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and hypertension.

Goal 6. Clean water and purification

Ensuring the availability of water and its sustainable management and purificationfor all.

Waste water treatment processes using microalgae as fixers of heavy metals and other compounds are a very promising circular alternative compared to their aerobic and anaerobic counterparts from an economic and environmental standpoint. AlgaEnergy participates in bioremediation projects of effluents from other industries, through the application of its microalgae technology.

Goal 7. Affordable and non-contaminant energy

Ensuring access to affordable, safe, sustainable and modern energy for all.

Microalgae will be the precursors of 4th generation clean and inexhaustible biofuels. They are an inexhaustible resource for the production of different types of biofuels, for example biodiesel or bioethanol. Having already reached the technical viability of inexhaustible microalgae-derived biofuels, the next step is to reach the economic viability, an objective for which it is essential to develop technology through continuous R&D. AlgaEnergy is probably the only company in the world that has been fully committed through the whole value chain, from cutting-edge genetic engineering to the development of innovative extraction processes and, in fact, has already managed to produce sustainable and inexhaustible microalgae-derived biofuels.

Goal 8. Decent jobs and economic growth

Promoting sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent jobs for all.

According to a study by the European Commission, blue biotechnology is one of the sectors in which more added-value is generated per job created, which facilitates the generation of quality jobs. For AlgaEnergy, a company committed to equality, inclusiveness, quality, stability and safety in the workplace, its human team is its main asset.

Goal 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and encouraging innovation.

Microalgae´s immense potential application in various industries still remains to be discovered, from the production of biomaterials to their integration into sustainable architectures. In this context, a commitment to innovation is essential to continue developing efficient solutions based on microalgae with high added-value. AlgaEnergy has an innovation network of more than 130 consortiums worldwide with which it collaborates on innovative projects to develop sustainable solutions to cover needs in different industries.

Committed to SDG

In line with its strong commitment to sustainability, AlgaEnergy has integrated the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), approved by UN in September 2015, into its business strategy and vision.

Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities

Making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Microalgae have great potential to contribute to the necessary transition to circular economy, from wastewater treatment to exploitation of industrial CO2 emissions. AlgaEnergy is a company committed to making our planet a space for coexistence and more sustainable progress thanks to the exploitation of the potential offered by microalgae.

Goal 12. Responsible production and consumption

Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

Microalgae are an inexhaustible resource that does not compete with other raw materials and are also renewable, because by using CO2 and sunlight they generate a high-quality biomass which can be used in many sectors. Moreover, the technology and production processes developed by AlgaEnergy -the most advanced in the world-take advantage of the large amount of CO2 emitted by other industries as the main nutrient of microalgae, in a circular economic model. Finally, all AlgaEnergy products in different sectors promote sustainable production.

Goal 13. Climate action

Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its effects.

Microalgae are the most efficient CO2 biofixation system on the planet. Through photosynthesis, they capture up to 2 kg of this greenhouse gas for every kg of biomass produced. In fact, microalgae -which live in all aquatic ecosystems -are the largest producers of oxygen of the planet. They appeared almost 3 billion years ago and changed the atmosphere by making it habitable for humans. According to data from NASA, they directly produce more than 50% of the oxygen of the planet; however, as precursors of all plant life, they are also indirectly responsible for the rest of the oxygen that exists worldwide. The technology developed by AlgaEnergy uses greenhouse gas emissions from other industries to grow microalgae, in a circular business model that is a first at global level.

Goal 14. Marine life

Conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Microalgae, also known as phytoplankton, are the basis of the aquatic environment’s food chain so all marine life depends on their existence. In addition, they are essential for an increased production in the aquaculture industry and this is the only solution to put a stop to the exploitation of extractive fishing that already threatens the survival of many species of fish.

Goal 15. Life of terrestrial ecosystems

Protecting, restoring and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, managing forests sustainably, combating desertification, halting and reversing land degradation and putting a stop to the loss of biological diversity.

Unlike other human activities causing deforestation and desertification, cultivation of microalgae does not require a large area or land with fertile value. In addition, their cultivation does not need natural resources that can alter the proper functioning of ecosystems nor generate any environmental impact, as production takes place in a totally controlled environment. Likewise, microalgae were the first colonizers of deserts and the precursors of all plant life of the planet. AlgaEnergy is the first at global level to work on the application of microalgae potential to the recovery of soil quality and productivity.
