AlgaEnergy patents a method for the enrichment of microalgal biomass in polyunsaturated fatty acids

AlgaEnergy has patented a process for enriching microalgal with different polyunsaturated fatty acids. The patent, developed cooperatively with the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), protects a method that has been carried out in microalgae of the genus Nannochloropsis and represents a great advance for the aquaculture industry.
Not in vain, the high content of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the species of the genus Nannochloropsis has been identified as the reason for its high nutritional value in aquaculture. This strain is one of those used by AlgaEnergy to produce its products under the brand AlgaePiscis®, highly sanitized biomass from different microalgae strains for its use in aquaculture.
María Segura, AlgaEnergy’s Technical Director, the Prof. Ana Maria Otero Casal of the University of Santiago de Compostela, and the researchers Isabel Freire Fontáns, Hugo Alexandre Milhazes Da Cunha and Juan Pablo Jiménez, are the inventors responsible of the new patent.
