AlgaEnergy, protagonist of AseBio's Green Innovation Forum

01 December, 2020

The biotechnology company has actively participated in the three sessions of this important meeting, which it also supported as the main sponsor.

AlgaEnergy has actively participated in the Green Innovation Forum organized by AseBio last week and whose objective was to stimulate a recovery agenda that promotes and renews Spain's commitment to science and innovation. The biotechnology company, which was the main sponsor of the event, was also invited to participate in three activities of the intense and interesting agenda of the event.

During the first day of the meeting, which this year was conducted online, María Segura, Deputy General Manager and Technical Director of AlgaEnergy, participated after the inauguration of the event by Ana Polanco, President of AseBio. Segura presented the immense potential of microalgae in order to respond to three of the great challenges that our society faces -food security, energy efficiency and the environmental sustainability- through the innovative, sustainable and effective solutions that AlgaEnergy has developed in the last decade.

On the second day of the event, Carlos Rodríguez-Villa, General Manager of AlgaEnergy and responsible for leading AseBio's Industrial Transformation Commission, moderated the round table 'Biotechnology and Industrial Transformation: Towards a green and sustainable model'. Rodríguez-Villa led an interesting debate that included the participation of Galo Gutiérrez, General Director of Industry of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism; Pablo Bascones, Partner responsible for sustainability at PwC; José Luis Palma, Adviser at Gomez-Acebo& Pombo; Miguel Arraras, Director of Business Development, EMEA at Acciona and Enrique Espí, Technical Advisor - Sustainable Chemistry at Repsol. Rodríguez-Villa closed the round table by highlighting that “Spain has the potential to be a European innovation hub. There is talent and capacity for it”.

Finally, in the third and final session of the Green Innovation Forum, dedicated to the agri-food sector, Luis Felipe Posada, Commercial Director for Iberia at AlgaEnergy, participated in the round table for ‘Sustainable Food: Farm to Fork Strategy’. The round table showed that biotechnology will be one of the indispensable tools for the implementation of the Farm to Fork Strategy of the European Commission, whose objective is to make Europe the first climate-neutral continent by 2050.

Along with Posada, the following people also participated in the round table: Esperanza Orellana, General Director of Agricultural Productions and Markets of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; Carlos Vicente, Director of the Public Affairs, Science and Sustainability Area of Bayer Crop Science Spain; Goyo Sanzol, General Director of Pentabiol and Pedro Gallardo, Vice President of ASAJA. Posada pointed out during his speech that “challenges well-faced can turn into opportunities. We want farmers to be more competitive without sacrificing sustainability. At AlgaEnergy we believe that it is possible”.

René Castro, Deputy Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), was in charge of closing the event. During his intervention Castro pointed out that “science and innovation are indispensable in a world that will be overpopulated and will face recent and external upsets. We will have to make a global effort”.
